The Battlefields Trip 2010

This year’s Battlefields Trip was a very successful one. Accompanied by Mr Wilson, Mr Kellett, Mr Bailey, Mrs Tonks and Mrs Wilson, 54 Year 9 pupils gained insights into World War One by visiting the Ypres Salient and the Somme. On the first day of the trip, our party visited Bayernwald preserved trench system, Tyne Cot cemetery, ‘In Flanders’ Museum, the Menin Gate in Ypres and Poperinghe. On the second day, we travelled to the Somme battlefield. The boys learned about the contribution made by the Pals battalions and visited the Ulster Tower, Newfoundland Park, Thiepval Memorial and Lochnagar Crater. A number of the boys were able to visit the graves of relatives. After two long but memorable days, the boys returned home with a greater appreciation for those who fought in World War One.
