Year 8 retain the Aldershot & District Football Cup!

On Tuesday 8 May at the EBB stadium, home of Aldershot Town FC, the Salesian U13 Football Team played against Yateley School in the schools’ Cup Final. The match was very close with Salesian dominating the possession early on, but Yateley looked strong on the counter-attack. The Salesian team came into the game boasting a stunning record of 40 games played over the last two seasons, winning 36 of them, with one draw and just three losses. The Salesian defence of Keeper Matthew Russell and Defenders Ryan Blake, Daniel Edgar, Jacob Webb and Harry Kearsley played at their best. Going forward Salesian dealt with the blow of losing captain Conor Fitzmaurice with a leg injury well and through Patrick Leahy, Max Brennan, Jacob Daniels and Sam Henneberg looked threatening when on the attack. Throughout the first half the final ball just avoided the Salesian team although Rory McMichael went close on a couple of occasions to opening the scoring. However, the half time score was 0-0.
The second half was more even with Yateley looking good on the break, although the Salesian defence was still looking very tight. With Louie Gilpin linking well with substitutes Michael Try and Ayotunde Adelakun, Salesian continued to look strong. Neither side though could find a goal and the game looked set for extra-time. With further fresh legs from Greg Morley giving Salesian more impetus and Conor Fitzmaurice coming back off the bench for a period in the second half Salesian snatched the only goal of the game. After good work from Michael Try and Louie Gilpin a corner was earned and Sam Henneberg kick it in, followed by man of the match Patrick Leahy heading the ball into the back of the net and seal the victory for Salesian College.
The Salesian team should be congratulated on winning both the District league and cup this season – a tremendous achievement!
