Year 11 in the County Cup Football Final at Fratton Park

Year 11 in the County Cup Football Final at Fratton Park

For the third year running, Salesian College reached the County Cup Final and this year as a real treat the Final was played at Fratton Park, the home of Portsmouth Football Club.  Salesian played against a strong Crestwood College team and after a good start, fell behind.  Salesian battled hard with Ryan Simmons having a great game in goal, making some excellent saves and a couple of brave blocks.  The defence of Captain David Richardson, Sam Jefferies, Michael Gregory and Domenico Iorio were providing a strong rear-guard for Salesian.  Oliver Spite and Callum Chiplin went close to levelling the score, but the half time score was 1-0 to Crestwood.

A strong start was needed by Salesian in the second half and Ben Rosoman and Callum Chiplin tried their best to provide this impetus to the Salesian side.  With Matthew Wyke and Jack Bull working hard down the flanks and Robert Deans trying hard for a chance it seemed that Salesian may level the scores.  However, a controversial free-kick gave Crestwood the chance to extend their lead and they did from 18 yards.  Salesian then had to work hard for a goal to get back in the game and substitutes Connor Giltrap, Ben Cave, Andrew Jackson and Adam Cauldwell gave Salesian hope with fresh legs and energy.  However, late on Crestwood scored against the run of play to seal their victory and secure the Hampshire Cup.  Salesian man of the match was Ryan Simmons who had an impressive game in goal.

The Salesian team should be very proud of their efforts with a record of quarter-final, semi-finals and three finals over their five years together in the Hampshire Cup, winning 1-0 in Year 10 on a memorable night at the EBB stadium, home of Aldershot Town FC, with Robert Deans scoring the goal.  It has been an honour to be their coach and they have provided many fantastic memories in their time together, congratulations to all the squad that have played over the five years.
